Ryan Laments State Of American Politics
(Washington, DC) — Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan is lamenting the current state of American politics. In a farewell address at the Library of Congress today, Ryan said disagreement often gives way to outright distrust. He argued that outrage has become a brand and he called it exhausting. Ryan warned — “All of this pulls on the threads of our common humanity, in what could be our unraveling.” Meantime, Ryan said House Republicans have kept their promises to the American people. He cited economic growth, tax cuts and efforts to make the military stronger.
Looking ahead, Ryan said a broken immigration system must be fixed. He also insisted that Social Security and Medicare must be reformed. Ryan announced this past spring that he would not seek re-election. The Wisconsin Republican has been in the House since 1999 and was elected Speaker in 2015. Ryan was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2012. At the Library of Congress, he said — “I don’t know what’s next.” Democrats will take control of the House next month and California’s Nancy Pelosi is expected to be the next Speaker of the House.
