Court Strikes Down Census Citizenship Question
(New York, NY) — A Federal court is blocking a White House plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. The decision by the New York court is a victory for civil rights groups who argued the addition of the question into the survey would disenfranchise minority groups. The census will help determine congressional seats and federal funding decisions for years to come. The White House argued the question was necessary in order to uphold certain provisions of the Voting Rights Act. But the court called that justification a “sham.” The Justice Department is expected to appeal the decision.
