(Ocean Isle Beach, NC) — Alligators are slipping into a deep freeze as they wait out the winter months. The scaly reptiles were seen frozen solid under water with just the tip of their snouts sticking out of the ice in The Shallotte River Swamp Park in North Carolina. This what scientists are calling the reptilian equivalent of hibernation, or Brumation. The alligators essentially lower their body temperatures and slow their metabolism to conserve energy when the water freezes during winter. The gators then thaw out when the water gets warmer and go about their normal lives.
