Chicago to Become 51st State?
State Representative Brad Halbrook has filed a bill that would urge the U.S. Congress to make Chicago its own state.
Included in the wording of the proposal: “The divide between the City of Chicago and downstate Illinois is frequently manifested in electoral results such as the 2010 gubernatorial election in which the Democratic candidate won the election despite only carrying four counties out of 102.” And, “The City of Chicago is frequently treated as a separate region of the State of Illinois and has often been exempted by major legislative incentives the General Assembly enacts in law because of this.” In addition, “The City of Chicago is often bailed out by taxpayers in the rest of the state, such as the $221 million bailout for the CPS pension system that was signed into law last year.”
The bill has not been assigned to a committee yet. It is a house resolution, meaning it does not need approval from the senator or the governor.
The bill has two co-sponsors, State Representative Chris Miller, and Darren Bailey.
