(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the Violence Against Women Act is being reintroduced. The bill providing protection for domestic violence survivors expired in February after its funding was excluded from President Trump’s spending bill. On Thursday, Pelosi and other House members reintroduced the bipartisan legislation. The California Democrat said at a news conference that the reauthorized bill has new provisions that strengthen legal protection for LGBTQ, Native American and immigrant women, and make it harder for those convicted of domestic violence crimes to acquire firearms. The Violence Against Women Act has been reauthorized three times since it was first signed in 1994.
