A final assault on the last ISIS stronghold in Syria is beginning. The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces paused the final attack yesterday in order to allow civilians to exit the village of Baghouz. A spokesman for the SDF says today there are direct violent clashes between Syrian forces and those in the final enclave of the jihadist group. There are reports of airstrikes, explosions and mortar fire in this final attack meant to wipe out ISIS from Syria. But, it’s still unknown exactly how many ISIS fighters and civilians are left in the roughly half-mile square pocket under ISIS control.
