The Macon County Sheriff’s office is warning all residents of a phone scam that tries to trick you into sending money. The scammers claim you missed a court date or other proceeding and warn that a bench warrant is out for your arrest. They then direct the victim to send money electronically to expedite the process and to turn themselves in to the sheriff’s office. They may also leave voicemail, directing you to call a phone number with 217 area code when the call itself came from a number with a 317 area code. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and report it to the sheriff’s office.
