New York City Declares Measles Emergency
(New York, NY) — New York City is declaring a public health emergency after a spike in measles cases. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio said today the emergency exists in parts of Brooklyn, adding people who are not vaccinated for the disease should do so. de Blasio warned parents in the Williamsburg neighborhood, which is a majority Hasidic Jewish community, that they will be fined one-thousand dollars if they cannot provide proof that their children have been vaccinated. There have been 285 measles cases since October, mostly among children.
