UPDATED: US Extradition Request For Assange Due To Computer Related Offense
(London) — Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange could soon be headed to the U.S. after his arrest at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. UK officials confirmed the request by the United States for Assange’s extradition is for an alleged “computer related offense.” The Justice Department is expected to officially announce charges today. If extradited to the U.S., Assange could face charges connected to the posting of classified information. Assange is set to appear at a Westminster magistrates court later today.
He’s been wanted by British authorities since skipping out on bail in 2012, while he was the suspect in a Swedish rape investigation. He’d been living in the embassy under the diplomatic protection of Ecuador for seven years. UK’s Foreign Secretary welcomed today’s arrest, saying Assange “is no hero and no one is above the law. He has hidden from the truth for years.”
