Righter opposes costly business mandate
Mattoon, ILL— Just weeks after passing a massive minimum wage increase, Senate Democrats have voted to pass yet another broad, costly mandate negatively impacting Illinois’ employers, stated State Senator Dale Righter (R-Mattoon).
Senate Bill 471, would require employers to provide 40 hours of paid sick leave per year that would include excused absences for visiting incarcerated family members, court cases, and probation hearings.
“I think the average person would view sick leave as a necessary immediate family need where a working parent needs to stay home with their child or the young adult needs to care for their sick parent, not for the individual on supervised release who needs to appear in criminal court for violating the terms of their release or the person who’s been convicted of a violent felony and needs the paid time off to attend their own sentencing hearing,” said Righter. “It is clear that we have fundamentally different idea of what qualifies as sick leave. This is yet another example of the extreme policies being proposed and passed by Democrats in Springfield.”
Senate Bill 471 passed out of the Senate on May 1 and will now advance to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
