The suspect DeWayne Craddock was a longtime government employee who opened fire in the city’s municipal building, killing 12 and injuring four others, three critically. A memorial of flowers and American flags are growing at the site of the shooting, while white crosses with hearts are being placed throughout the area in honor of the victims. A public vigil is scheduled for Tuesday night at a Virginia Beach church.
Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen says Craddock sent an email giving a two weeks notice of resignation the morning of the shooting, but it’s unclear why as he was in good standing as an employee with the city. Police Chief Jim Cervera said Craddock was not terminated from his job as a city engineers and wasn’t in the process of being terminated. Cervera adds a motive for the shooting remains unclear.
