The number of measles cases in the U.S. is now over a thousand. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the one-thousandth case of measles “is a troubling reminder” of the importance of promoting vaccinations. He also reminds the public that vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent the spread of diseases such as measles. The current outbreak is the worst outbreak in nearly three decades. Measles was declared eliminated in 2000.
