Soil Temperatures Hotter Than Average
(Peoria, IL) — Soil temperatures in central Illinois are hotter than average. An environmental program manager at the University of Illinois’ State Water Survey said yesterday that the average temperatures in mid-July 2019 are higher than those in 2018. Scientists says the temperature of roughly four inches of soil below the surface rose four degrees in the first half of July. The heat means some crops don’t have deep enough root systems to reach moisture deeper in the soil.
