Illinois Changing Firefighter Training
(Springfield, IL) — Illinois’ new firefighter course will be half at home, half on the job. The Illinois State Fire Marshal says the state is offering a blended course on how to become a firefighter. Candidates will now do the written work to become a firefighter online and at home. They will then travel to the U of I on weekends to learn the practical aspects of the job. State Fire Marshal Matt Perez says the new course will make it much easier for firefighters to get trained and certified. Over 70-percent of firefighters in Illinois are volunteers, and Perez hopes the new course will help more people join the ranks.
