(Springfield, IL) — The state of Illinois is getting rid of the statute of limitations for major sex crimes. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday that takes effect on January 1st. Before, prosecutors had ten years to file charges if someone reported a crime to law enforcement within three years of it taking place. Backers said the change was needed because a number of victims don’t come forward for years, and in some cases, decades. Opponents to the change worry that anyone who has to defend themselves from charges will have little to no physical evidence and the memories of witnesses will have faded.
