Today Marks 18th Anniversary Of 9-11 Attacks
(Undated) — Today marks the 18th anniversary of the 9-11 terror attacks. Nearly three-thousand people died when three hijacked airliners slammed into New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Passengers aboard a fourth airliner fought with hijackers and the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The fourth plane was thought to be headed to Washington, DC. The coordinated assault was carried out by al-Qaeda operatives and was the deadliest terrorist attack in history. Nine-eleven prompted the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, where the plot was hatched.
Nine-eleven also led to a restructuring of the U.S. government. Congress authorized creation of the Department of Homeland Security and a director of national intelligence. Counterterrorism became the primary mission of the FBI. Meantime, U.S. forces killed al-Qaeda leader and 9-11 mastermind Osama bin Laden in 2011. The covert mission was authorized by then-President Obama after the CIA identified bin Laden’s likely location at a compound in Pakistan.
