Kitchen Painting Sells For $26 Million
(Paris) – A small painting that hung over a woman’s cooking hotplate for years sold for more than 26-million-dollars at auction Sunday in Paris. It turned out to be a masterpiece known as “Christ Mocked,” painted around 1280 by Italian Cimabue, widely regarded as the father of the Renaissance. The ten-by-eight-inch painting was covered in grime but otherwise in good condition. It was in the home of a French woman in her 90s who almost sent it to the dump with a bunch of other goods before having it appraised. At the time, the painting was expected to fetch up to six-and-a-half-million dollars. Needless to say, it exceeded those expectations. No word yet on who won the auction.
