UPDATE: Illinois Department of Health Confirms Second Coronavirus Case
(Chicago, IL) — Illinois Department of Health officials are confirming the second case of coronavirus in the state. Speaking with reporters, Director Ngozi Ezike [[ en-gah-zee ee-zee-kay ]] said the risk to the general public “remains low” and citizens should not cancel any public activities. Ezike says the second patient is the husband of the first confirmed case, a woman in her 60s who recently traveled to Wuhan where the virus originated. Ezike says this is the first confirmed case in the U.S. that was transmitted by human-to-human contact. She says there are currently 21 individuals who are considered to be “under investigation” in the state for potential risk of symptoms.
Commissioner Allison Arwady says both victims remain hospitalized and in isolation, in accordance with Center for Disease Control standards. Arwady says this development is something that the department prepared for, seeing as he is the husband of the first victim.

The Illinois Department of Public Health, Chicago Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health will hold a press conference at 1:00pm, Thursday, January 30, 2020, after the discovery of a second confirmed case of coronavirus in the state. Officials say a woman infected with novel coronavirus has infected her husband. It’s the first person-to-person spread of the disease in the United States the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The woman, who is in her 60s, recently traveled to Wuhan, China, to take care of her sick father. Her husband did not travel to China. The woman is currently under quarantine at a suburban Chicago medical center. Her husband is hospitalized in stable condition, but health officials did not say where.
