SMA Testing At Birth On Track To Start This Summer
(Springfield, IL) — Testing at birth for a rare genetic disease is set to begin this summer. Hospitals will begin testing for spinal muscular atrophy when babies are born. The push by Representative Dan Swanson came after the parents of five-year-old SMA victim Lily Parlier teamed up with the lawmaker. A bill to require testing passed in 2018 and Swanson announced Friday that plans were on track to begin testing July 1st.
