Trump Invokes Defense Production Act
(Washington, DC) — Under growing pressure from governors and lawmakers, President Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act. It essentially nationalizes certain industries to boost production of medical supplies and protective equipment. In a White House briefing, VP Mike Pence cited ongoing progress on the availability and distribution of coronavirus test kits and ventilators. Trump said the White House has been “besieged in a beautiful way” by companies wanting to get involved.
Trump resisted calls to activate the emergency defense provision in comments earlier this week, saying the federal government is not a “shipping clerk.”
