Coronavirus Death Rate Rising In New Orleans
(New Orleans, LA) — Health experts say Mardi Gras celebrations may have contributed to the rising coronavirus death rate in New Orleans. The number of known cases in Louisiana rose by over 500 yesterday, to over 23-hundred, including at least 83 deaths. Nearly half of those cases come from New Orleans. The city reported yesterday that the death rate rose to 46 after a 17-year-old died of the virus. Infectious disease experts say Mardi Gras celebrations were a likely catalyst for the outbreak. Over a million people crammed into the city for the event in late February. Other factors contributing to the outbreak could be New Orleans’ poverty rate, lack of healthcare and high rates of residents with pre-existing conditions.
