Indiana Turning To Feds To Pay Unemployment Claims
(Indianapolis, IN) — The state of Indiana is looking to borrow from the federal government to pay unemployment claims. The state’s Department of Workforce Development yesterday said Indiana’s one-billion-dollar unemployment fund is down to just 70-million-dollars, and it will likely be empty in the next few weeks. DWD’s Josh Richardson says the state is paying about 11-thousand unemployment claims, but he said it was up over 100-thousand back in March. Richardson says no one should worry that their unemployment check will be canceled. Indiana last had to borrow for its unemployment benefits during the 2008 and 2009 recession.
