Highland Woman Who Faked Breast Cancer, Genetic Disorders Pleads Guilty
(East St. Louis, IL) — A Highland woman is admitting to falsely claiming she had breast cancer and genetic disorders to defraud non profits. Sarah Delashmit pleaded guilty yesterday in federal district court to wire fraud and mail fraud. Court documents show Delashmit falsely claimed she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy to attend a nonprofit camp in Texas for individuals with disabilities. While at the camp, Delashmit confined herself to a wheelchair. She also admitted falsely posing as a breast cancer survivor to defraud a New York-based nonprofit organization serving young adults diagnosed with cancer.
