Indiana Lawmakers Consider Override On Local Emergency Powers Law
(Indianapolis, IN) — Indiana’s legislature may once again check the governor over emergency powers and the coronavirus. Lawmakers are due back at the Capitol Monday, and they are already talking about possibly overriding Governor Holcomb’s veto of the local emergency powers law. That law would allow mayors or county commissioners to overrule local health commissions when it comes to the state’s next, long term health emergency. The governor vetoed the plan, saying he wanted to allow public health managers the freedom to manage the next crisis. Lawmakers already overrode the governor’s veto of a similar law that would allow them to step-in and help manage the state during the next prolonged emergency.
