On student move-in day, EIU employees to picket for fair contract.
University administration still dragging its feet after more than a year of negotiations.
Today (Wednesday, Aug. 19), as students begin moving in for a new academic year at Eastern Illinois University, the frontline workers who make the university happen—including building service, dining and clerical-technical employees—will be on an informational picket line.
EIU employees have been in contract negotiations with university administration for more than a year.
Workers want fair wages and a commitment that administration won’t privatize dining services and building services (which would put employees out of work).
“It’s long past time for the administration to stop dragging its feet and settle a fair contract now,” said Natalie Nagel, staff representative for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 981 which represents EIU workers.
