Lake Land College to host second annual Math and Science Open House
Lake Land College will host the second annual Math and Science Open House from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31. The event allows high school juniors and seniors to learn more about Lake Land math and science careers and academic programs such as chemistry, biology, physics, math, geographic information systems (GIS) and pre-engineering.
Tours of facilities and labs will allow those interested to see and experience the state-of-the-art technology and equipment available to students in these programs. The event will consist of five sessions based on different aspects of the math and science programs at Lake Land. These include exposure to both digital and real cadavers, testing everyday items for pathogens, identifying an unknown drug, and using tools to work with light waves and electricity. In addition, attendees will be able to track the spread of a pandemic using GIS technology and use mathematical reasoning to solve a problem.
Attendees will also experience real world and work place applications associated with fast-growing occupations in STEM fields.
“The hands-on experience with our labs and state-of-the-art equipment can really help prepare our students for success when they graduate or transfer,” Division Chair of Math & Science/Geography/Earth Science Instructor Mike Rudibaugh said. “When those who are interested visit this open house, our hope is that they will see and take with them the quality of education they will receive at Lake Land College.”
The event will conclude with lunch served and a Q/A panel with current students and academic personnel who will share their LAKER experience and answer any questions perspective students have.
Parents or guardians of high school students, as well as anyone interested in pursuing a math or science degree, are welcome to attend.
