Lake Land College Editorial from President Bullock
Today, I am thrilled to announce the launch of “The Laker Advantage Podcast, Sidebars and Insights with Dr. B.” This podcast will serve as a companion to my monthly editorials and will focus on a wide range of innovative topics that impact higher education, our communities and our future. In our first episode, we discussed the various ways the Laker Advantage helps individuals better themselves by finding a career path and an area of passion that moves them forward.
The Laker Advantage encompasses all that Lake Land has in place as a community college to give our students an edge in reaching their goals in life. It also encompasses the advantage we bring to our communities by offering area residents the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized education at an affordable price close to home. It is our commitment to work with area businesses and community leaders to grow the future from within our communities.
We meet regularly with area professionals to ensure that our career, technical and trades courses and programs remain relevant to their needs. By working with the professional advisory councils, faculty make sure students are trained in skills that are specifically necessary for jobs that are in high demand locally.
We are also focused on creating new options to break down barriers for individuals who are already in the workforce and may not have time to invest in their education. We offer Hyflex remote courses that provide students with the option to participate online or in person, online courses and flexible schedules. Our new Tech 2 Day program allows students to come to campus just two days a week for their education and spend the remainder of the week working. We’re listening to our students and employers and thinking differently about how we deliver opportunities for students to earn credentials.
At Lake Land College, we have built an infrastructure that not only fits into their lives, but provides the support and services to help them succeed. We believe everyone has the opportunity to succeed and that everyone has the skillset and knowledge to succeed in the area they are passionate about. Our goal is to help them bring that out in themselves and find their success.
Our podcast host, Kyle Jeisy, is a great illustration of the Laker Advantage. Kyle graduated from the small Stewardson-Strasburg High School. He enrolled at Lake Land in our esteemed Radio/TV Broadcasting program and transferred to Eastern Illinois University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. Following his career in broadcast news, he returned to his alma mater and took a position as the videographer in the marketing and public relations department. He and his family have made Mattoon their home and he continues to share the Laker Advantage story that followed him through his successful career.
I look forward to sharing future topics with you via the podcast and this monthly communication. I hope you will follow the Laker Advantage podcast on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/4KlORfdOzklrTnpuFKrm2i and join us in exploring the innovative ideas and opportunities that will shape the future of higher education and our community. Together, we can continue to provide a high-quality education and a valuable resource for our students and the communities we serve.
