The Mattoon baseball team finished up the home portion of the regular season with a 10-0 six-inning win over Urbana. The Green Wave swept the home-and-home series from the Tigers.
A three-run, two-out rally in the first inning kick-started the Mattoon offense. Garrette Branson drew a walk. Courtesy runner Tanner Miller swiped second base. Peyton Morrow drove in the game’s first run with a double. Sawyer Scott’s RBI-single brought in Morrow, and Elijah Schlabach capped the inning with a run-scoring hit.
Mattoon scored three more times in the second inning. Trey Skocy and Colton Shoot both singled to start things off. Rayme Hamilton’s fly ball to right was mishandled by the Urbana defense. Will Courtney hit a sacrifice fly, and Branson followed that with a two-run double. After two innings, the Green Wave held a 6-0 advantage.
Mattoon added two runs in the fourth. Shoot led off with the second of his three hits on the day. He stole second and scored on Courtney’s double. Scott made it 8-0 with another two-bagger that brought in Courtney. The Green Wave ended the game by the run-rule in the sixth inning. Runs batted in by Scott–his third of the game–and Alex Lilly’s single secured Mattoon’s 17th win of the season by the score of 10-0.
Elijah Schlabach had a strong outing to notch his fourth pitching win of the season. He tossed a four-hit shutout, walked none, hit one, and struck out two. The Green Wave also turned a pair of double plays in the field.
Mattoon plays at Normal Community on Friday to finish up the regular season. The team will play at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Sunday following the Cardinals’ game. You will be able to hear that game on 101.3 WMCI.
The post-season begins on Monday for the Green Wave. Mattoon opens with Paris at 4:30pm.
