According to WTHI Online boaters are already out testing the waters for Memorial Day Weekend and we have just a few reminders to stay safe on the water or on the shores. With the warmer weather finally showing up before summer really hits higher temps, it’s no uncommon for even seasonal or annual boaters to forget something needed for their boats. Officers with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources are even asking boaters that they do a free boat inspection. They aren’t trying to find any violations or pick on boaters, they just want to make sure that you and everyone that will be on your boat will be safe before you leave the docks. Things to obviously make sure you have on board are life vests, proper paperwork, sounding devices like whistles or horn blowers, fire extinguishers, and batteries. Also, remember to make sure life vests are the correct fit on each person on the lifeboat, including children 13 and under who have to wear them at all times. Once you leave the docks however officers have the right to enforce any violations you may have on your boat, and that’s why inspections will want to be done before. Boating season is one to enjoy and have plenty of fun out on the water, we just want to make sure you have a safe summer and boating season.
