Mattoon CUSD #2 Educator Deanna East Honored with ISBE Award of Excellence; Five Others Receive Recognition
(Mattoon, IL — March 2, 2026 ) Mattoon CUSD #2 is proud to announce that Deanna East, science teacher at Mattoon High School, has been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) with the distinguished Award of Excellence. This honor is part of the 2026 Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year Awards.
East has served the Mattoon school district for sixteen years teaching Honors Zoology, Honors Biology II, and Advanced Biology I. She was nominated for the distinction by a student. “I am deeply honored to be recognized by one of my own students, there’s no greater reward than knowing I’ve made a positive difference in their life,” East said.
The Award of Excellence is the highest honor presented through the Those Who Excel program. Recipients demonstrate an unwavering commitment to equity and the success of all students.
East was one of six Mattoon CUSD #2 teachers recognized this year, with five additional staff members earning Awards of Special Recognition. Honorees are commended for the skills, passion, and talent they bring to their schools.

“We are extremely proud.” said Tim Condron, superintendent of Mattoon CUSD #2. “Their dedication to student growth, strong instructional practices, and collaboration exemplifies the high standards we strive for across the district. We are grateful for the positive impact each and every one of them has had and for the meaningful contributions they provide to our students and the broader Mattoon community.”
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders also acknowledged this year’s honorees for their outstanding contributions. “The 2026 Those Who Excel awardees and Teacher of the Year Cohort represent the very best of our profession,” said Sanders. “Congratulations to this year’s honorees, and thank you for the difference you make in the lives of students across Illinois.”
The Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year Awards recognize individuals who make a significant impact in Illinois schools across six categories, including classroom teachers, early career educators, school administrators, student support personnel, educational service personnel, and community volunteers.
