Spring cleaning season is here, and the City of Mattoon is planning its Annual Cleanup Day for Saturday, April 11th, running from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Mattoon Yard Waste Facility, located at the corner of Shelby Avenue and Logan Street. Roll-off dumpsters will be on site, and the event is open to Mattoon residents only! (Make sure to bring a driver’s license or some other proof of residency before you head out.)
Here’s a breakdown of what you can drop off and where:
General waste is being handled by Rumpke Waste & Recycling, who will have dumpsters on site for household junk and general debris. Mervis Industries will be on hand to take scrap metal and appliances. Electronics like those old TVs and computers will also be collected and sent to Com2 for recycling. And the Yard Waste Facility itself will be open as usual for leaves, grass clippings, limbs, and other plant material.
There are some things the city cannot accept, so keep this in mind before you load up the truck: no car parts, tires, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, liquid or hazardous waste, concrete, brick, rock, soil, or ashes will be accepted.
A few other things worth noting: the drop-off is limited to loads from 1-ton trucks and trailers, and commercial contractors are not eligible to use the site. Residents will need to unload their own material, though city staff will be available to help with heavier items. When you arrive, line up on Shelby Avenue entering from the west.
If you’re a senior citizen or have a disability and can’t make it out to the site, the city will make special collection arrangements on a case-by-case basis. You’ll need to call 217-235-5171 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and get your request in by noon on Wednesday, April 8th. Items must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 9th. Keep in mind that special collections are for oversized items only and no regular household trash will be taken.
