Drivers in Neoga, or those just coming through the area, will need to plan for longer drive times after today as construction work along Interstate 57 brings some notable traffic changes. The work being done on I-57 largely affects those travelling south and these repairs aren’t expected to end all that soon.
The southbound on and off ramps near Neoga will be closed beginning today and are expected to remain closed through Thanksgiving. That means if you’re coming from the Mattoon area, you will not be able to exit the interstate at that location. Similarly, if you’re heading to Effingham, you will not be able to use that ramp to get on the interstate. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes or give themselves extra time when traveling during this construction period.
There’s another concern worth noting. When accidents occur on the interstate, traffic may be diverted through Neoga, including through the four-way stop in town. City officials are working to install flashing stop signs as soon as possible to alert drivers that they are required to stop. Drivers coming off the interstate may not be familiar with the intersection however, and there’s no guarantee they’ll notice the warning lights. Residents and regular commuters are asked to use extra caution at that intersection, particularly during periods of heavy diverted traffic.
Alternate routes, including the Lake Road, should also be used with care as increased traffic is expected on those roads as well. For more information, Neoga City Officials are your best bet for up-to-date information.
