If Charleston Avenue is part of your daily commute, it’s time to start planning for extra drive time starting tomorrow!
The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the next phase of roadwork along Illinois Route 16 in Mattoon is getting underway this week. Howell Paving is expected to begin adjusting manholes and valves along Charleston Avenue as early as Wednesday or Thursday, and lane closures will be in effect during that work.
Things will begin ramping up even further later this month. On April 27th, surface milling is set to begin between Swords Avenue and 6th Street, followed by a resurfacing project starting on May 4th. Drivers should expect lane restrictions and construction traffic throughout both of those phases of road work. As always, this schedule is weather dependent, so expectations and timelines could shift for the project’s end date.
Meanwhile, work is already ongoing between 6th Street and Lake Land Boulevard, where crews are wrapping up stop light improvements that began a few months back. That stretch will go through its own round of manhole adjustments, milling, and resurfacing once the traffic signal work is finished. A final pavement surface will then be applied across all aforementioned areas to complete the job.
The bottom line is… if you’re traveling through this stretch of Charleston Avenue over the next several weeks to potentially months, give yourself some extra time and stay alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. Additional updates will be released by the City of Mattoon as the project starts to move forward.
