An Eastern Illinois University Athletic Director is getting some national recognition, and it’s the kind of honor that doesn’t come around every day.
Dwight Rutledge, the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at EIU, has been named an ‘Emerging Leader Award’ recipient by the National Association for Athletics Compliance. Rutledge is one of just two people throughout the country to receive the honor this year. The award recognizes compliance professionals with at least six to ten years of experience who are making a meaningful impact in their field while showing the kind of leadership the profession calls for. It’s a recognition that draws many competitive nominations from athletic compliance offices at colleges and universities across the nation, and Rutledge’s peers clearly believed he was worthy of the spotlight.
Rutledge actually has a long history with Eastern Illinois University. He first came to Charleston as a graduate assistant in the compliance office back in 2015, earned his master’s degree from the university in 2016, and returned for a second stint in September of 2024. In between, he built up his impressive resume with stops at: Knox College, University of Illinois-Chicago, Western Illinois, Upper Iowa University, the University of West Florida, and Morehead State.
Those who nominated him commented on his deep knowledge of NCAA rules, his calm and “solutions-oriented” approach to problem solving, and his commitment to mentoring both his colleagues and student-athletes. By all accounts, Rutledge is the kind of person that makes everyone around him better at their job too.
Rutledge will be recognized in person at the 2026 NAAC Convention, set for June 7th through the 10th, at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.
