For the sixth straight year, Casey-Westfield and Windsor/Stew-Stras met in the post-season softball tournament. The Lady Warriors advanced behind the strong pitching of Ava Goble. The final was 2-0 and it sends Casey-Westfield to the Elite 8 on Monday. Goble fired a complete game four-hit shutout with one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Warriors scored single runs in the first and second innings. The opening tally came on a sacrifice fly by Gabriela Frye. It was a bit unusual because the runner, Anna Karras, scored from second base on the play. The left fielder, Cameron Carey, made the catch in deep left, but lost her balance. Karras, who also stole two bases to reach 50 on the season, came all the way around to score the game’s first run.
The lead went to 2-0 in the second. Ella Whitacre led off with a single. After a one-out walk to Hannah Schackmann, Addi Seaton laid down a perfect bunt. The throw to first got away and that allowed the courtesy runner for Whitacre, Claire Kusterman, to come around and score. As it turned out, that’s all the run support Goble and the Warriors would need.
Windsor/Stew-Stras had hits from Kendra Hayes, Kinsley Dunaway, Makenna Corrie, and Zaida Wascher. Kendra Hayes took the tough-luck loss in the circle. She went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
