Some good news this time around for Lake Mattoon… the beach is reopening Thursday, July 2nd, after water testing showed a drastic improvement in E. Coli levels that had shut it down. Lake Mattoon Beach had been closed for nearly a week after we reported its closure on June 25th.
Lake Mattoon Beach will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The turnaround in water quality was significant actually despite recent news. Two new samples collected today came back at just 12.1 and 13.1 E. Coli per 100 milliliters, well below the Illinois Department of Public Health’s recreational standard of 235 per 100 milliliters.
That’s a massive drop from the readings that triggered the closure, which came in at 344.8 and 325.5 per 100 milliliters.
The rest of Lake Mattoon was partially open throughout points of the beach closure. Just in time for the holiday weekend and the scorching heat wave on us now!
