Over $700,000 available for municipalities, counties and other units of local government
Springfield – Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Director James Jennings today announced $766,600 in funding through the Public Buildings Energy Efficiency Program for projects that include energy efficiency upgrades identified in an energy efficiency assessment or audit conducted within the last five years. The Efficient and Resilient Public Building Grant Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is now posted.
“This program provides financial resources as well as technical support through Illinois EPA’s Office of Energy,” said Director Jennings. “This funding will improve energy efficiency and provide cost savings to public buildings in Illinois.”
The Public Building Energy Efficiency Program provides financial assistance for energy efficiency improvements at public buildings owned by municipalities, counties, and other units of local government. Energy efficiency is essential for reducing energy demand, conserving natural resources, and minimizing the environmental impacts associated with energy production.
Examples of eligible projects include building envelope insulation, window replacement lighting upgrades, programmable thermostats and occupancy sensors, heating and cooling system retrofit, high efficiency appliances, and a transfer switch. An energy efficiency assessment or audit refers to a review of the property conducted by a third-party professional that results in recommendations at improving energy efficiency and/or reducing energy costs.
Grants will be capped at a maximum of $200,000 per grantee. Funding is provided through the U.S. Department of Energy State Energy Program to Illinois. The Notice of Funding Opportunity and additional information can be found at on Illinois EPA’s Office of Energy webpage Energy webpage. Applications for the Efficient and Resilient Public Building Grant will be accepted through September 30, 2026. Applicants must apply through the Grant Accountability and Transparency Act Grantee Portal.
