Starting today, parts of Mattoon will have a smell of fresh oil in the air as the city begins its annual street maintenance season across several different neighborhoods.
Mattoon drivers in the affected areas will want to plan around some street work starting today. The City of Mattoon and Earl Walker Company are beginning an oil and chip project on select city streets, with preparations having started at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25th. Weather permitting, the work is expected to take about a week, running each day between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.!
The project covers Dodge Grove Cemetery, the east and west streets of Stinson, Annis, and Bell Avenue from 9th to 17th Street, and the north and south streets of 7th through 12th Street between Charleston Avenue and Marshall Avenue.
Oil and chip resurfacing works by applying a layer of liquid asphalt to the road surface followed by a layer of small stone chips, which helps seal and protect the pavement and extend the life of the street before a full repaving is needed.
Avoid parking along those roadsides during the scheduled work hours to keep the project on track and crews working safely. Residents who live along the affected streets should plan to use driveways or alternate parking during the daytime hours this week, and drivers passing through the area should expect some loose gravel and reduced speeds as work progresses.
