According to the Mattoon Police Department, Maverick C. Bowman, age 25 of Mattoon, was arrested on Thursday July 7th at 7:09 a.m. That arrest occurred in the 2100 block of Charleston Ave. Bowman was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deliver, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful use of Weapons, and Obstructing Justice.
The incident that led to Bowman’s arrest began when Bowman himself called police and claimed to be an innocent bystander who just happened to witness a person breaking into a car in the 2100 block of Charleston Ave. Bowman claimed that he was not associated with the car in question. Officers then observed Bowman’s I.D. card in the open trunk, as well as a car rental agreement with Bowman’s signature thereon inside the car. A police K9 was summoned and alerted for the presence of drugs. Further investigation revealed that Bowman was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine that he held for sale, that he possessed a controlled substance medication without a prescription, that he was in possession of numerous knives which included a switchblade, and that he lied to police. Bowman then admitted that he had rented the car in question and had been using it to transport illicit drugs for resale, and that he became upset when another drug dealer broke into the car and stole from him.
Additional charges of Obstructing Police are pending against Bowman. That case alleges that Bowman filed a report with Mattoon police in June 2016 claiming that he was beat up during the course of an attempted robbery. Bowman later admitted that said beating took place when he was engaged in the course of a separate illicit drug deal.
Mr. Bowman was taken to the Coles County jail.
