The Illinois Supreme Court is evaluating oral arguments today on the law that governs how hospitals qualify for property tax exemptions. The 2012 law required not-for-profit hospitals to prove that their charitable services exceed the amount of the taxes they would otherwise pay to get an exemption. The law was ruled unconstitutional in the state appellate court a year ago because it didn’t limit the exemptions to hospitals that are used exclusively for charitable purposes. A ruling could come later this year.
