From WCIA, Governor Rauner signed a bill Friday removing criminal penalties for possession of marijuana. The consequences are now a civil fine, similar to an everyday traffic ticket. The new law makes possession of up to 10 grams a civil violation with a fine up to $200. Adults will not face jail time. In addition, the offense will be expunged automatically, preventing a person from having a criminal record. This makes Illinois the 21st state to remove the threat of jail time for marijuana possession.
