The Mattoon Green Wave traveled to Salem to take on the Wildcats in a must win for both teams.
Mattoon began the scoring in the first quarter with a 69 yard touchdown run from Julian Gittens to go up 6-0.
Gittens ran in again, this time in the second quarter an from 55 yards out and a two point conversion it 14-0 in the second quarter.
Salem got on the board in the second quarter as well. Quarterback Nathan Roth ran in from one yard out to cut the lead to 14-6 after the missed extra point.
Mattoon was not done in the second quarter yet though. Nick Poorman run in from 18 yards out to extend the lead to a two possession game, 20-6 at halftime in Salem.
The scoring was done for Salem, but Mattoon’s Gittens ran in from 39 yards out in the third quarter and kicker Quinn Camfield hit a 39 yard field goal in the fourth to ice Mattoon’s 29-6 victory.
With the win, Mattoon improves to 3-3 overall this year and now 2-1 in the Conference. The Green Wave will host Effingham (3-3) next week in a battle of 2-1 Apollo teams.
With the loss, Salem drops to 1-5 overall on the year and is still winless in Apollo play at 0-3. The Wildcats will travel to first place Mt. Zion to take on the Braves next week.
