According to a recent press release from the Illinois State Police District 10, a four vehicle personal injury traffic crash occurred the afternoon of Wednesday, November 23rd along I-57 Northbound at milepost 232 in Champaign County at 3:55 PM. Those involved were Vincent Pickens, 54 of Springfield IL (Unit 1), Edward Saliba, 24 of Peotone, IL (Unit 2), Kandy Spahr, 57 of Roscoe, IL (Unit 3), and Richard Cavanaugh Jr., 41 of Herrin, IL (Unit 4). The only unit who had a passenger was unit 3.
Preliminary information indicates all units were northbound on I-57 passing milepost 232. Unit 1, 2, and 3 were in the right lane while unit 4 was in the left. Unit’s 2 and 3 were stopped in traffic when unit 1 failed to reduce speed and rear ended unit 2. Unit 2 was then forced into the back end of unit 3, towing a U-haul trailer. Unit 1 then steered left and struck unit 4 in the left lane causing unit 4 through the grassy median and across the southbound lanes onto the right shoulder of the road where it then came to a rest. Unit’s 2 and 3 were disabled in the right lane of northbound traffic.
Two drivers were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The incident caused an excessive traffic backup. Multiple vehicles were towed from the scene and eventually all lanes reopened.
