A two vehicle collision along I-74, east, near milepost 202.25 Monday evening (October, 2nd), leaves one deceased. Preliminary investigation details from Illinois State Police indicate traffic was slowed due to an upcoming construction zone. David J. Schoessow, 59, of West Bend, WI (unit 2) driving a Truck-Tractor Semi Trailer was slowed when Eric M. Hagen, 28, of Omaha, NE, (unit 1) struck unit 2 due to failure to slow down in time. Unit 1 collided with the rear of Unit 2’s vehicle and traveled partially underneath the trailer causing damage to the roof of Unit 1’s Chrysler Town and Country.
Unit 1 had 3 passengers: a 27 year old female and two male children, ages 3 and 1 in the backseat. After the collision, the female passenger, attending her children in the second row was ejected from the vehicle due to failure to wear a seatbelt and succumbed from her injuries. The children were properly secured and uninjured. The driver of unit 1 was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
