A 16-year-old from Dieterich was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Champaign following an accident near Newton Lake Saturday night. According to the Illinois State Police, a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old from Dieterich was southbound on North 500th Street when the vehicle drove onto the west shoulder and then partially into the ditch. The driver then attempted to regain control of the vehicle but overcorrected while turning, which put the vehicle into a sideways skid. The vehicle re-entered the roadway while skidding, and then struck a ditch and then collided with a tree. The vehicle overturned during the collision and came to rest on its passenger side, sitting atop the trunk of an uprooted tree. 19-year-old Jordan Kollman, of Newton, the driver, and a 15-year-old passenger, from Dieterich were taken to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital. The driver was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident/driving too fast for conditions, and failure to wear a seat belt. The 16-year-old and 15-year-old were cited for failure to wear a seat belt.
