(Washington, DC) — The U.S. plans to increase its nuclear arsenal in response to a reported build-up of similar weapons by Russia. The plan announced by Defense Secretary James Mattis in a nuclear review Friday calls for the development of two “low-yield” nuclear warheads to be launched from ballistic-missile submarines and warships. The Pentagon says Russia has been stockpiling similar nuclear weapons. The review states that expanding U.S. response options will help ensure the employment of nuclear weapons less likely.
