Saturday, March 24th brought snow for portions of central Illinois and as a result a fatal traffic crash occurred along I-72, eastbound, at milepost 152 in Macon County. Preliminary details from Illinois State Police District 10 indicate a 61 year old male from Decatur, IL (Unit 1) was eastbound, during a time in which three other vehicles, also eastbound, had lost control of their vehicles due to snow and ice covered roadways and ended up in the center median. Unit 1 then lost control of his vehicle, entered the median and stuck a pedestrian, a 63 year old female of Springfield, IL (unit 2) who had exited her vehicle after entering the median and was standing in the grassy median. Unit 1 drove through the guardrail, across the westbound lanes of I-72, and came to a rest in the westbound ditch.
The driver of unit 1 was driving a charter bus with 27 passengers, all of whom sustained no injuries. Unit 2 (the pedestrian) was pronounced deceased at the scene. Unit 1 was issued citations for Driving too fast for driving conditions of the roadway and improper lane usage.
