(Washington, DC) — House Republicans want to tighten the federal food stamp program, which is used by more than 40-million Americans. Republicans slapped a provision in a farm bill that would broaden state workfare requirements for food stamp recipients. Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office say the new requirements could reduce food stamp rolls by up to one-million people over a decade. Democrats say the Republican effort will hurt the poor.
