(Undated) — New research shows that combining immunotherapy with chemotherapy almost doubled the survival time of certain lung cancer patients. The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed the combined therapy helped prolong lives compared with chemotherapy alone. The study results apply to patients whose lung cancer doesn’t start in the surface lung cell layer and lacks certain genetic mutations. Immunotherapy essentially harnesses the body’s immune system to attack tumors. Lung cancer causes over one million deaths every year around the world.
