(Freeport, NY) — Long Island is taking the first round in the battle with a Tennessee city over who created the Long Island Iced Tea drink. Kingsport, Tennessee says the drink was invented by Charlie “Old Man” Bishop on the city’s Long Island during prohibition, while Long Islanders claim it got its start at the Hamptons Oak Beach Inn by bartender Rosebud Butt in 1974. A friendly competition took place Wednesday at Hudson’s on the Mile restaurant in Freeport with blindfolded judges giving the nod to New York bartenders. The competition shifts to Kingsport next month.
